Why Did They Leave School? A Self Determination Theory Perspective into Narratives of Finnish Early School Leavers

The present study aims to provide insights into the experiences of early school leavers within Finnish context. We conducted a narrative inquiry among eleven who were in prison when they interviewed. Self Determination Theory (SDT), more specifically concept frustration three basic psychological needs competence, relatedness and autonomy, tendency people move towards supporting environments, was used as an interpretative tool, along with contextual information. identified pathways out school, differing locus need thwarting circumstances availability access transfer satisfying environment. Furthermore, experienced threat safety shared element accounts. Additionally, findings add information about indifference case participants, which is new theorising continuum perceived satisfaction terms SDT.
